Tidy Desk, Tidy Mind, Cable Tidy

There is a real realtionship between how tidy your space is and your levels of productivity and stress. According to one US study, the more tidy the office or house, the more relaxed and productive most people feel. This particularly applies to desk space.

Tidy Desk, Tidy Mind: The Facts

In 2011, Russell Research in the US carried out a study on the subject of tidiness and stress on behalf of the personal organizing website "Rubbermaid". They found that 91% of participants feel "overwhelmed" by the untidiness of their house. On top of this really significant figure, 57% of those questioned said that an untidy house is one of their top causes of stress, while 42% said that having an untidy space makes them feel more anxious and just under half claimed they won't invite friends to their home when they feel like it's cluttered.

The same study also concluded that most of the participants were a lot happier when their homes were tidy and felt that an organised home really reduced their stress levels. So now we know the facts, how do you go about keeping a tidy desk and with it, a tidy mind?

Cable Management

The best way to keep each cable tidy is to acquire some sort of cable organizer. You can get them in various shapes and sizes and they will keep untidy cables out of sight, leaving you to get on with your work stress free.

Use a Label Maker

Label makers are a handy item to have, not just for labeling folders but also for cable labeling. Once you’ve sorted your cable organizer, cable labels will help you to easily track which cable connects to which piece of equipment without having to take apart the entire cable tidy.

The Old Classic - In and Out Trays

You just can't beat a basic tray system for keeping the paperwork in order,  They're an inexpensive way to organise loose pieces of paper that may be stacked untidily. This stops the heaped stacks from falling and creating extra mess, or even getting lost.

Keyboard Tidy

Attach some cheap Velcro to the underside of your keyboard and the wall or side of your desk. When you need a clear desk for writing or sorting out paperwork, just stick the keyboard to the Velcro and hey presto - it’s out of the way.

Weekly Purges

And at the end of the day, the simplest way to deal with the mess is just remove it.  Do a weekly lean up to keep your desk tidy, along with cable management and paper trays.

So there you go - a tidy desk equals a tidy mind. Just follow these simple tricks and you’ll find that productivity flows and stress is a thing of the past.
