We've all heard media reports over the years about how we have come to rely on our motor cars, and how this desperate desire has led to continuing research into making motoring kinder to the environment. When this day comes, the chances are the majority of motorists will be happy to spend their money on cars that run on electricity rather than on petrol.

Sometimes it’s easy for the average man or woman in the street to imagine what must be going on in research departments, and there are one or two mere mortals who may even feel they know the answer, but when it comes to working on cars, most of us are left in the dark. The way an internal combustion engine works is relatively straightforward, and many of us know a little about the process, but coming up with a variation on this theme without further damaging the environment is a complex matter.

If you work in the motor industry, especially in research and development, you will know just how much pressure there is from senior management as well as, in many cases, national governments. Unfortunately, we all know that it’s a race that very few people will be able to win, and by the time there is a winner it may be too late for the environment.


Nobody knows what the car of the future will look like, of course, but it’s perhaps safe to assume that it won’t be powered by either a petrol or diesel engine. These resources are gradually being used up, and their supply will come to a complete end at some point. At that moment, the whole world will need to be thinking about where we, as a global community, go from here and what can be done in order for us to start replenishing resources rather than extracting them. The answer may not be apparent at all, even by that late stage.
